My Happy Halloween!!

Oh what a glorious Halloween was had.
The festivities began the weekend prior to Halloween with Leslie, Mandy (out from Orem) and me getting gussied up for the YSA dance in Hartford, Connecticut. The theme was Hollywood and in honor of fake blood, we chose JAWS. Although we were too late to be included in the costume judging portion of the evening, it must be said we were the best.
Halloween morning, after a delightful sleep-in!! (oh I love sleep), Leslie and I donned our festive head costumes and went to the annual dog costume contest/parade at Faneuil Hall.

3rd place: Chicken Poodle Soup
(~chicken poodle soup! chicken poodle soup! chicken poodle soup with a carrot on the side!!~)

2nd place: The USS Minitz
(this one was my favorite, so creative and the poodle was very classic)

1st place: Shark attack!!
(way to represent!)

After the parade we headed back to our neck of the woods for the Vegetarian festival, taking place just a block from our house. All the free meat substitute tofu product samples a girl could want! Nobody seemed to mind that I was dressed as a notorious meat eater and we went home with two giant tubs of hummus a vendor was trying to get rid of. Success!!

When Leslie and I got home and got our year supply of hummus safely put away in the fridge, we decided to bike some vegan cookies we had just bought over to our good friend James' house to wish him a Happy Halloween. The weather had decided to pretend it was summer and our bike ride was lovely. A few blocks from our house I noticed I was feeling especially free and untethered on my bike, at which point Leslie suddenly asked me "where's your helmet?" Oops. For the sake of beating the dark I threw caution to the wind and we continued to James'. Going to turn down his street, Leslie again broke the silence with a "there he goes!" James was just turning down the street in his car. I've never thought of James as a wild driver, in fact, I often liken his driving to my grandmother's, however we chased him unsuccessfully a number of long blocks until he finally pulled over to let a cop pass by. Ahh, the exhilaration of chasing cars wildly through Dorchester without a helmet! Quite a thrill. When we finally met up with him, we found, to our delight, that James was looking for some Halloween cheer. So of course we invited him over to carve squashes, play Rumis, and eat hummus.

After James left we finished off the evening with the classic "Sixth Sense" (oh M Night Shyamalan. You silly thing.) and then this pooped little shark went to sleep.

Happy Halloween!! Hope yours was lovely too and if you live in the vicinity please stop by sometime for some hummus. muah!

hope

this morning I cut the heads and tails off my celery and washed what was left and the green smell on my hands was fresh and wonderful. Then I smeared them with my favorite peanut butter ever--which is the fresh made-in-front-of-your-eyes kind from Whole Foods, made with honey roasted peanuts, that is grainy and crystally crunchy from the sugar. Then I got out the big marshmallows (because we don't have any little ones right now) and got out the kitchen shears and clipped the marshmellows into little bite sizes and laid them on the logs. I love using scissors in the kitchen and cutting mellows is the second best thing I love to do with them (second only to cutting long lengths of kimchi). Last but not least I put raisins in between the marshmellows and saran wrapped the bundle of celeries and packed them into my and leslie's lunch sack.
and now that lunch sack is waiting for me in the nutrition department refrigerator. and that's how I know it's going to be a good day.

More holiness give me, more strivings within.
More patience in suffering, more sorrow for sin.
More faith in my Savior, more sense of His care.
More joy in His service, more purpose in prayer.

More gratitude give me, more trust in the Lord.
More zeal for His glory, more hope in His Word.
More tears for His sorrows, more pain at His grief.
More meekness in trial, more praise for relief.

More purity give me, more strength to o'ercome,
More freedom from earth-stains, more longings for home.
More fit for the kingdom, more used would be,
More blessed and holy, more, Savior, like Thee.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY E

you great goose!

I had a vision

flying home from california.
I looked out the window to the sea . I saw one wave form out of the water. Pick itself up into a violent, pointed peak. then resolve itself back
into flat ocean.
my eyes opened and I saw a million waves. form and rage and die.
the sea looked to me like a battle ground. like passion.
the plane lifted.
out my window
the waves lost something
the higher I went.
they grew squatter.
and less menacing.
Rounded hills.
to ripples.
to nothing.
until the ocean turned to smooth blue glass.
and I thought about my prayers. and passions.
and God, looking down. from his jet plane in the sky.
